When teaching there are so many activities that we expect our kids to do. As parents we see the reluctance much more than teachers would. Kids naturally complain to parents, or should I say, they feel more comfortable to say how they feel to their parents than to teachers in a school.
“I don’t want to do that!”
“It hurts my hand”
“I don’t know how to do that”
School is often filled with ‘learning’ and ‘tasks’ that actually serve no purpose or relevance to day to day life.
I am often reminded of this in my attempts to educate our kids when they reject my attempts at doing things.
A typical example recently is trying to get my 6 year old to write. He refuses and drags his heels. But recently my husband has been getting him to write lists of the things he plans or wants to do that day. And he has approached the task with lots of enthusiasm and dare I say, joy!
This is because, I believe, it’s relevant and has purpose in his life. He can see the importance and how it will make his life better.
All the research and learning I’ve done backs up this idea, but in everyday life it is too easy to forget or dismiss it. This is a simple reminder for me to align every day tasks to our learning and how positive to can be for us all.
A bit of creativity will take us a long way.
